First Creek Fuels Sale Photo   First Creek Fuels Sale:1,893 acres of natural pine and fir stands, and 306 acres of plantations would be logged, including 482 acres of group selection (mini clearcuts), 147 acres of green tree retention (clearcut everything except 15% of the stand) 143 acres of shelterwood (leave just enough trees to naturally seed), and 23 acres of sanitation (clearcut). This sale lies just to the north of the Erickson Thin (2,556 acres), and provides habitat for species such as deer, elk and bear.

Tennant Fuels Sale Photo   Tennant Fuels Sale: This sale is the first of seven proposed logging projects to thin the forest down to 40% canopy and prevent the spread of wildlfire on over 27,745 acres. 4,861 acres could be thinned in this sale, with almost 700 acres of clearcuts and partial clearcuts. KFA believes that thinning below 60% canopy is wrong because it allows excess light to reach the forest floor, encourages flammable brush growth, drys out the forest and removes nesting, roosting and dispersal cover.

Goosenest LSR Thin Photo   Goosenest LSR Thin: The Forest Service plans to thin over 2,045 acres in the Goosenest Late Successional Reserve, an area set aside to recover and sustain sensitive, threatened and endangered species. Logging is planned above Juanita Lake, a popular recreation area; and in Northern Spotted Owl, Northern Goshawk, and Bald Eagle habitat. This project is just South of the Butte Valley Wildlife Preserve, an area known for its Swainson Hawk and Bald Eagle populations; and contains a unique forest of juniper, pine and fir trees.

Tamarack Sale:The project area contains a mixture of pure pine stands in the lower elevations, and pure fir forests in the upper elevations. Many large trees over 21 inches in diameter still live here, and provide habitat for species such as the Northern Goshawk, Pallid Bat and American Marten. This sale is primarily a thinning sale (1, 050 acres), although there are 59 acres of Green Tree Retention (patch cut clearcutting), proposed.

Pomeroy Thin Photo   Pomeroy Thin: Just North of Mt. Shasta, the Pomeroy Sale plans thinning on over 4,500 acres of forest, some of it home to the Northern Goshawk, Pine Marten and Pallid Bat. Over 9 miles of temporary road would be re-constructed, and 2 to 4 miles of new temporary roads built. This area is an important snow recreation area, and contains good habitat for deer, elk and bear. 1,716 acres of pre-commerical thinning, underburning and mowing are also proposed.
