SHASTA RIVER

Dwinell Dam   Dwinell Dam: Built in 1928, Dwinell Dam blocks passage for migrating and spawning Coho Salmon to the Upper Shasta River Basin. Six flashboard dams, and several small diversion dams divert streamflows resulting in hot water temperatures, increased algae growth, and decreased dissolved oxygen levels, all lethal to fish. Much of the streamside vegetation has been cleared along the Shasta River for grazing and alfalfa growing. KFA would like to see fish barriers removed, diversions reduced, fish screens installed, and riparian areas restored.
